Code over dinner, then another half hour of review
In an October 9 account, Simon Willison described adding a newsletter archive to his Django blog with Codex voice mode. Around half an hour of conversation while cooking produced most of the feature; another half hour of typed review and changes followed before deployment.
The voice session covered models, migrations, admin configuration, newsletter imports from Substack and GitHub, archive pages and search. A local preview let him refine the presentation as he worked. Weekly newsletters linked back to Substack; published monthly newsletters had their own pages.
Review changed the implementation. An import used Git in a subprocess, but access to a private repository led him to switch to an API-based import and handle credentials. He also adjusted the public pages.
For Willison, voice made development possible alongside another activity. Typing remained better for precise examples, errors and code changes. This is his reported experience, not an independently reproduced speed benchmark.
